Make colorful laundry bags that are perfect for adults to take on an extended vacation or for kids to take to summer camp.

Supplies listed are enough to make one large and one small laundry bag.

1 yard of quilting cotton

1/2 yard of coordinating quilting cotton

3 yards of 3/8"-wide cording

All-purpose thread

Transparent adhesive tape

Safety pin

Cut It

From the cotton, cut one 32"x42 1/2" rectangle for the large bag.

From the coordinating cotton, cut one 18"x28 1/2" rectangle for the small bag.

From the cording, cut one 44" length and one 64" length.

Measure It

Place the rectangles right side up on a flat work surface. Designate one long edge of each rectangle as the upper edge. Mark 2 1/4" from each rectangle upper-right corner along the right edge. Mark 5/8" below each mark (1).

Sew It

Use 5/8" seam allowances.

Fold the large rectangle in half widthwise with right sides together. Stitch the side, beginning at the upper edge and ending the stitching at the first mark. Backstitch to secure. Stitch the remaining side and lower edge, beginning the stitching at the second mark.

Press open the side seam. Fold the opening raw edges 5/8" toward the wrong side; edgestitch the opening folded edges (2).

Fold the bag upper edge 1/4" toward the wrong side; press. Fold the edge another 1 1/2" toward the wrong side to create a casing. Edgestitch the casing lower edge. Topstitch 1/4" from the edgestitching. Topstitch 1/4" from the bag upper edge.

Clip the bag corners. Turn the bag right side out; press.

Wrap a small piece of tape around one long cording end. Insert a safety pin into the cording just beyond the tape. Thread the cording through the casing, using the safety pin as a guide. Knot the cording ends and remove the tape. Cinch and tie the cording to close the bag.

Repeat to stitch the small laundry bag, using the remaining cording length.

TIP: Embellish the bags with fusible appliqués or trim the seams using pinking shears to add a decorative touch.
