Book Buddy

Create a clever reversible bookmark to keep your page when reading on snowy winter days.

Scraps of two print cotton fabrics (at least 2” wide)

Coordinating all-purpose thread

Two buttons (at least 1/2”-diameter)

Thin hair elastic

Hand sewing needle

Removable fabric marker

Sew It

Measure the book height. Double the measurement, and then subtract 1 1/2”; record.

From each print fabric, cut one rectangle measuring 2”x the recorded measurement. Piece together scraps if needed to achieve the recorded measurement. Align the rectangles with right sides together. Stitch the long edges and one short edge using 1/4” seam allowance, leaving one short edge open for turning.

Clip the corners and turn the bookmark right side out; press. Double-fold the short raw edge 1/4” around the hair elastic.

Slipstitch the first fold or machine stitch close to the first fold, backstitching at the beginning and end to secure.

Using a removable fabric marker, center a mark 3/4” from the remaining short edge on both bookmark sides. Loosely hand stitch a button at each mark, and then wrap the thread around the stitching under each button three to four times to create a small thread shank.

Wrap the bookmark around the book pages and front cover and secure the hair elastic around the button.

Bookmark Shortcut

Use ribbon instead of fabric to make a one-sided bookmark with fewer edges to finish.

Determine the bookmark length using the instructions at TK; record.

Cut a length of 1/2”- to 1”-wide ribbon according to the recorded measurement. Fold each short raw edge 1/4” toward the wrong side; stitch close to the fold.

Fold one short end 1/4” around the hair elastic toward the wrong side. Stitch over the previous stitching line.

Stitch a centered button 3/4” from the remaining short edge on the bookmark right side.
